HIDDEN :
I remember looking through all the wise reminders a young person might find at our local book shop. One stood out. It was a book marker and it says "Stand for nothing and you'll fall for anything".
I'm not really sure who coined this line but he sure is wise.
Who are you?
The question that echoes on the four corners of my mind. While I try to sleep, on my way to work, on my lunch break or let's just say on every waking moment. I was once having this conversation with a friend and we asked questions that make us understand meaning, purpose and pain. How some of us, especially the young ones seem to not care about these things anymore .
"Seems"- our generation is nothing like any generation before us and maybe even after. We are clever, creative, passionate and powerful and yet we seem to be the most pretentious generation, ever.
You seem to be happy but are you really happy. You seem to care but do you genuinely care, you seem to be rich but are you really rich.
I wanna travel back in time when fewer people see what I do and the urge to want to make people know I exist was not as strong as what we feel right now.
Information is powerful. Sometimes in the ugliest ways. Weekdays at 6 PM, I remember waiting for the world news update on our national TV channel back in Philippines. Boy ,do I love knowing what's happening in Egypt or Paris or everywhere really. The world seemed to be so big and impossible and mysterious. But now, it's the opposite. From the moment you wake up, you already know what's happening half way through the world. We check every social media, we update ourselves on what's happening with our friends or even strangers. Don't get me wrong, this is beyond amazing when everything seems to be in reach but I kinda miss the idea of not knowing. Our own strength backfired at us.
Information is proportional to influence, whether it's a good or a bad kind of influence. It changes us maybe gradually or drastically, consciously and unconsciously. I believe this is why we are the most pretentious because we are the most informed generation to walk this planet. We are bombarded with information we don't even need. This shapes us. And sometimes it forces us to wear a mask just to fit in. We seem to not care about the important things in our lives just like what my friend and I was talking about. But trust me, everyone does. Maybe some people wear their hearts on their sleeves. It just so happens that some only care when it's 2 am in the morning and they are forced to wrestle with their hopes and fears.
Hidden - untouched, pure and uncorrupted. Do you still have things in your life that resonate these words? Things that are sacred to you and you alone. Perhaps a memory or a dream. Don't let the voices of this world corrupt them. Guard them with everything you have.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that it's okay to be hidden in a time and age where it seems like we have to update and be updated by the world every now and then. Take a breather. Take some time to think. Learn to imagine again just like when you were a kid. Listen to yourself. Analyse. Know what you love and hate. Learn to stand up for something.
" DO YOU REMEMBER WHO YOU WERE BEFORE THE WORLD TOLD YOU WHO YOU SHOULD BE? "
